“Through a blood bond,” Kier replied. Even as he spoke, he received a bitter reminder that he and Cole had never shared that type of mind link. When Cole’s glare turned venomous, he quickly added,
“Vane has a human, a donor. He sent me a message through that man.”
His clarification didn’t seem to do much help. “It’s true,” Cole replied coldly. “He’s here. Let me guess, you came to save him.”
“He only wants what’s best for everyone,” Kier argued.
“Breaching the Covenant? Are you mad, Cole?”
Cole just shrugged. “Why do you even care about that? It’s not like the Imperator would ever go against Manturanael. It’s just the humans he’d conquer.”
“Do you even hear yourself?” Kier couldn’t believe his ears. “You can’t possibly think that course of action is wise.”
“I don’t care about wisdom.” Cole snarled at him. “I care about vengeance, taking what Vane wants most and crushing it in my fist.
And what he cares about is order. Once the Covenant disappears, so will Vane’s beloved position as Kin Lord and everything else he defines himself as.”
Kier was horrified. “But why? What did he ever do to you?”
Cole gave him a look of disbelief. “He betrayed me. He sold me out to the Imperator, but most importantly, he stole you.”
Kier wished he could say he was surprised by the conclusion Cole had drawn, but the bloodkin had been jealous of Vane even before they’d been separated. “Vane is my friend and nothing more,” he replied, willing Cole to understand, to accept the truth of his words.
“Please, you have to do something. You can’t allow the Covenant to be broken.”
Even as he spoke, Kier wondered just what kind of influence Cole had over the Imperator that would push Aran into determining foreign policy according to Cole’s whims. He didn’t get the chance to ask.
Guards appeared in the doorway, taking Kier by surprise. He’d been so distracted that he hadn’t even felt their approach.
